Full body scanners – Full body scanners are to be installed at Nice airport in the coming weeks. The controversial equipment, which produces an image of the entire body, will be used to screen passengers boarding international flights. To be installed in Terminal One, its effectiveness will be assessed until the end of the year. Nice Cote d’Azur is France’s second busiest international airport, with over 10-million passengers a year.
Estrosi backs Fillon – Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has thrown his weight behind Francois Fillon in the battle for control of the UMP. Party heavyweights are battling to replace ousted President Nicolas Sarkozy at the head of the right-wing body. Some had believed Mr Estrosi was considering his own bid for the leadership; but he has chosen instead to back the former Prime Minister. The other key contender is party spokesman Jean-Francois Copé.
Train kills man – A man who went missing from a Cannes nursing home was hit and killed by a train yesterday afternoon. The 77-year-old vanished mid-afternoon, after apparently climbing over a gate. He was known to attend a local bar, or visit his wife’s home nearby. He was hit by the TER train at a crossing; causing delays to rail traffic until 6.30pm.
Filming in Monaco – A week after almost 2-thousand people attended a casting call for the forthcoming “Grace of Monaco” film, starring Nicole Kidman and Tim Roth, there’s another movie-in-the-making in Monaco. Crews were yesterday filming “11.6” in the Condamine neighbourhood; it is the story of rogue security van driver Tony Musulin. Musulin disappeared from Lyon in 2009 with a van load of cash, 11.6-million euros and reappeared a few days later in the Principality.
